How I Create Character Graphics

Image
For today's post, I'm going to go through the process I use when creating character graphics (and other graphics, though the process was developed originally for character graphics).  I make no claims as to how good or ideal the process is for doing this sort of thing, but I find it works for me and produces results that I am generally happy with.  There are no doubt some places where it could be optimized a bit if I were to invest in some better tools, but for now it works well enough. I usually, though don't always, start with doing some quick character sketches in my sketch book.  Usually something like:   I tend to draw six characters in a batch because the next step is to draw the characters onto a sheet of graph paper which has room for six characters, like so: Sometimes I skip the sketch book stage and go straight to sketching on graph paper.  Either way, I sketch each character facing each of the four directions as shown above.  I use graph paper because it lets me

Intro to FR

"FR", as mentioned in the previous post, is essentially a retro-styled SNES era RPG.  That means, among other things, that it uses a relatively low resolution pixel art visual style.  It taking some inspiration from games of that era, in particular the Final Fantasy series which was, ultimately, one of the main motivating factors in beginning this project.  Indeed, FR is intended to be a parody of the Final Fantasy series in particular and of various genre tropes in general and various other things along the way.  Even so I do hope it will manage to stand on its own for those who are not as familiar with the things that it is spoofing.   A Brief History of FR The project began in the hazy mists of the distant past and work on it has proceeded off and on over the years - though more off than on, most of the time - and has evolved much since its early incarnation.  It's only really within the last three or four years that FR has seen new life, marking the first real pro

Code Name: FR

Welcome to the FR Dev Blog! What is "FR", one might ask, and why does it deserve a dev blog?  For the first part of that question, "FR" is the code name I am using for an ongoing game project that I am developing, and have been for some time.  As to whether or not it deserves a dev blog, well, that I shall leave up to the reader to determine, but I hope that it shall provide some insight into the hows and whys of the project for those who are interested in such things.   Since this is a project that I work on in my spare time (it's not my day job), progress does tend to be on the slow side, so there is no set posting schedule for the blog.  My plan is to write a post when I feel I have something worth talking about or some substantial progress that I want to share.  How often that is remains to be seen. But really, what is FR? I suppose saying that it's a code name for a project doesn't really serve to say much about what that project actually is.  While
